美國的第一面奧運金牌是在1896年獲得，當時的得主是康諾利(James Connolly)，他在1896年的雅典奧運以三級跳遠成功奪金。
至於至今最多金牌的美國選手，當然就是游泳名將「飛魚」費爾普斯(Michael Phelps)。在美國男子泳隊13日贏得男子400公尺(4x100)混合接力冠軍時，費爾普斯的第23金到手。
美國也是第一個金牌數達到4位數的國家，遙遙領先其它國家。目前金牌數排名第二的是俄羅斯，但只有473面。而金牌數排名第二至第五的國家，總數加起來為1,004面，只比美國多出4面。
根據目前各國的得牌速率來估算，中國可望在2100年達成1千面金牌的目標；而德國則必須等到2204年。
